“I investigate the complexities of the Black body/experience through visual combinations of culturally inspired geometric forms. Named “Afroglyphs,” I decolonize the Western semiotic platform in order to create a new visual language/aesthetic.
What multifaceted layers of meaning appear when diverse narratives and textures intertwine? My inspirations spring from ancient forms of mark making such as hieroglyphics and Adinkra symbols along with more contemporary graphic systems such as emojis, graffiti art, etc.
Reworking these symbols rethink the stories of my culture’s experiences, providing truth and connection for viewers to ponder and expand upon.
In revisiting this ancient form of abstraction confronting the heritage and history of the African diaspora as a means of considering its present and future.”
