Syed Hosain is an artist based in the Twin Cities. Hosain received a MFA at Vermont College of Fine Arts and a MA and BFA in painting at the University of Karachi, Pakistan. He has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Syed has received several awards and grants, including a recent Minnesota State Arts Board’s Artist Initiative Grant. Hosain will have a solo exhibition at Soo Visual Arts Center Fall 2023.
Through the use of primarily painting as a medium, Syed explores the deeply entwined political relationships between culture, religion, nationalism and social codes. Experiences in his native country of Pakistan and as an immigrant here in the United States are woven into his work of redefining and rewriting history from an alternate perspective
The new work is a meditations on painting, by experiments in the most straightforward understanding of the term, Hosain mines events both historic and contemporary from various sources where the metaphoric stories of conflict. enlightenment, fear and identity intersect.
